Helsinki - Finnish wood-based products specialist UPM is to work with South Korea's Dongsung Chemical to develop renewable, sustainable forest-sourced materials for the Asian market. The collaboration will start with a renewable polyurethane for footwear. Dongsung will use UPM BioPura bio-based mon-oethylene glycols in the PU. UPM is currently building what it claims to be the world's first industrial-scale biorefin-ery in Leuna, 30km west of Leipzig in eastern Germany. This will convert sustainability sourced, certified woody bio- mass into next-generation bio-based chemicals, including monoethylene glycols. It is expected to have a total capacity of 220kT and be online by the end of 2023.
