US gas futures rose in March amid forecasts for lingering cold weather and the prospect that a sharp downturn in drilling would curb output, despite domestic stockpiles reaching a seasonal record. Prompt-month natural gas prices finished March at $1.959/mn Btu, up by 24.8￠/mn Btu, or 14.5pc, since 29 February. Prices received a boost during the month from forecasts for some late-season heating demand that could lift gas demand and help narrow the gap between current inventories and average levels.
