Australia’s Cooper basin has been seen as the next unconven-tional gas region since the discovery of commercial reserves of coal-bed methane(CBM)in Queensland 10 years ago, amid commitments to drill for tight gas,shale and deep coals. Australian upstream group Origin Energy and Australian independent Senex on 24 February agreed to start a pre-development plan for tight gas sands areas of South Australia’s southern Cooper-Eromanga basin,with a work programme of up to A$252mn($226.8mn).This venture,like others in the Cooper basin,is focused on developing reserves for the export market through LNG trains at Gladstone.The Cooper basin has supplied conventional gas to domestic users since the 1950s.
