THE CANADIAN government announced on January 9 that it had finalized an agreement with its US counterpart, along with Lockheed Martin and Pratt Whitney, for the acquisition of 88 F-35A Lightning II fifth-generation multi-role stealth fighters for an estimated cost of CA$19bn (US$14bn). This major acquisition marks Canada's largest investment in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in the past 30 years. The air arm's current, but aging fleet of legacy CF-188A/B Hornet multi-role fighters, are due to be withdrawn from operational service by the end of 2032.
