LEONARDO IS exploring the use of drones for logistics. The recent Sumeri Moderni trials in Turin saw drones operate over urban areas to represent the typical requirements of middle mile delivery (a parcel's journey from the distribution centre to the individual retail store). The trials were conducted with Poste Italiane and the Italian start-up drone developer FlyingBasket, whose FB3 system (able to carry up to 100kg payloads) flew routes of 15-50km around the Italian city. Focusing on a Poste Italiane sorting centre, the trial assessed the handling of heavy goods, drone loading/unloading in the logistics operator's hub, technological and procedural impacts and public acceptance. The tests were part of work towards the development of regulations for flying remotely piloted aircraft in urban environments. Relevant European Union legislation is expected in 2023.
