Aviation EU ETS costs to fall on global climate deal

The global airline industry would see a dramatic reduction in the costs associated with aviation’s inclusion in the EU emis-sions trading scheme (ETS) if temporary moves to limit the scheme only to intra-EU flights are made permanent, accord-ing to the International Air Transport Association (Iata). Iata estimates that EU ETS compliance costs solely for flights within the EU and the European Free Trade Association could total ?30mn ($38.8mn) in 2012, rising to ?130mn in 2020 if the European Commission’s decision to temporarily sus-pend international aviation’s inclusion in the EU ETS is made permanent. But these costs would rise significantly to ?1.5bn by 2020 if non-EU flights fall under the EU ETS, Iata warns.
