Forty growers, representing almost all of the UK’s leading producers of poinsettias, met in late November to make their judgement on twenty-one new or recently introduced non-red varieties. These were grown as part of the millionplus commercial cropat Neame Lea Nursery in south Lincolnshire. There was a clear top five, reported Poinsettia Discussion Group chairman Graeme Edwards, of Woodlark Nurseries in Hersham, Surrey. J’Adore Pink, a Princettia type from the German breeding company Dummen Orange, headed the list. Among the runners-up wasElectric Fire, from Syngenta, with large bright orange bracts and good plant habit. Mars Marble, also from Syngenta, and Matinee Glitter (Dummen Orange) also made the top five. So did Icescape, a white from Florensis, a rival for Alaska White, the current UK market leader in this colour. Bred by Lazzeri, Alaska White was not included in the trial.
