Germany’s plans to replace dwindling domestic and Dutch low-calorie gas supplies with high-calorie gas from southern Europe may not be the most efficient. Growing German demand for highcalorie gas may require a 30pc increase in high-calorie transmission capacity by 2030, according to gas pipeline operators association FNB’s latest network development plan. But extending the high-calorie transmission system means adding 17 measures to those already in the 2014 development plan, many of which were already intended to manage the change in German gas quality.
