Poland, Ukraine take action over Gazprom Opal deal

Poland’s state-controlled PGNiG and Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz are trying to block Russian state-controlled Gazprom’s access to extra capacity on the Opal gas pipeline from 31 December. The companies are concerned that a decision by the European Commission and German energy regulator Bnetza to grant Gazprom additional capacity on Opal - an onshore continuation of the 55bn m~3/yr Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea - could lead to a drop in Russian transit flows through their countries.
