European energy consumers could face one of the hardest winters in decades, as eforts to cut down on Russian gas run up against commodity market disruption. Supply of natural gas, which has been at the centre of the continent’s energy transition strategy, is not secure — for the power sector, industry and even domestic heating — because of the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. With energy security now trumping sustainability, Europe will increasingly turn to coal and oil, but these markets are struggling to deal with the increased demand.
