Tight LNG market until 2020 — Wood Mackenzie

High spot prices and tight LNG supplies could persist in Asia-Pacific beyond 2020 as a result of policy and regulatory uncertainty in Japan and South Korea, UK-based energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie says. The outlook is in contrast to the general market consensus that prices and supplies will ease around 2018 as new production comes on stream. Japan and South Korea — which together account for more than 50pc of global LNG demand — are promoting greater competition between new LNG suppliers to encourage lower prices. But uncertainty over their future nuclear power generation, as well as the timing and extent of market liberalisation, could delay buying decisions, resulting in less new supplies and higher LNG costs.
