First Gen targets LNG imports by 2016

Philippine generator First Gen plans to start importing 300,000 t/yr of LNG from 2016 to fuel its expanding power generation business, rising to 4mn t/yr in 2024. It aims to start initial engineering work on an LNG receiving terminal this year. “We will need LNG for our power plants that are running on declining indigenous gas reserves,” a First Gen official says. “We have a long-term gas agreement to 2024, but based on our consumption rate, this could end in 2023. As our core business is in generation, we realise we need energy security and flexible supply, especially when our long-term contract runs out.”
