Australian independent Woodside Petroleum’s January purchase of exclu-sive rights to develop an LNG export terminal in British Columbia is part of a long-term plan that may see it participate in upstream and/or pipeline projects in Canada, the company says. Woodside has no interest in upstream gas projects in Canada in the near term, but it would look at upstream opportunities in the medium term. The deal with the British Columbia govern-ment to develop a gas liquefaction facil-ity at Grassy Point on Canada’s Pacific coast was seen by some analysts as an infrastructure investment that is not aligned with Woodside’s core explora-tion and production business.
