Texas plans grid upgrades as Freeport LNG advances

Texas’ primary power grid operator is studying about $78mn in infrastructure upgrades needed to supply electricity to the Freeport LNG export project on Quintana island, about 70 miles (113km) southwest of Houston. Unlike other proposed LNG export projects that will use pipeline gas to fuel onsite generation, a majority of the power needed to supply Freeport LNG will come from the power grid to comply with Houston-area emission restrictions. Freeport LNG closed financing for two initial gas liquefaction and loading facilities and construction started in late November.
