The Chinese government plans to impose heavier penalties on large emit-ters,in the first major change to its envi-ronmental laws in 25 years. The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress in the week ending 25 April approved amendments to existing laws,citing their importance “for a country mired in pollution amid mounting public anger over a deterio-rating environment,”according to state news agency Xinhua.
