Earlier this year, in an effort to find out how much of a threat AI poses to the career of an engineering journalist, I conducted a little experiment and asked chat GPT (the most talked about of our fledgling AI overlords) to compose a one thousand word feature - in the chatty house style of The Engineer - exploring engineering applications of augmented reality (AR) technology. It was -I stress - an experiment; there was never any intention to publish the article. Nevertheless, the response, which arrived seconds later, did make me wonder whether my days might be numbered. The article gave a great overview of the engineering applications and benefits of AR as well as a rundown of some of the latest innovations and key product offerings in the field. It was apparently well-researched, well-written and interesting. Journo-bot 2023 appeared to have passed the test. It was a sobering moment.
