Welcome, to a special edition only on OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) - it is my honor to welcome you with this short preface. My most important message: First and foremost is the security of the information - even above interoperability. Without security, interoperability has no value. Second, there is no "one single" protocol that scales to all requirements for exchanging data from the smallest sensor, or with deterministic real-time for and between machines, and then also to the cloud and back. Third, standardized information is the key to digitization in all areas of our lives: Defining industry wide variable names and their meaning, transporting them via different protocols for different scenarios, and all this coupled with end-to-end IT security aspects -none of these can be tackled by any organization alone, not even the OPC Foundation. OPC UA is an IEC standard and is therefore ideally suited for collaboration with other organizations. Therefore, we cooperate with many partners from different markets and are proud to have already created over 65 OPC UA based industry specific companion specifications driven by the industry.
