THIS YEAR'S International Astronautical Congress (IAC), held in the central Indian city of Hyderabad, marked the 50th anniversary of the Space Age, which began with the launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957. India's first satellite, Aryabhata, was not launched until 1975, but the nation has been increasingly active in space since then and recently announded details of its Chandrayaan-1 mission to send a spacecraft to the Moon in 2008.
