1.1 The level of activity in the Brazilian concessions market ticked up a notch this month, as municipal leaders attempt to get deals across the finish line before election fever sweeps the country in 2022. The biggest opportunity ($850 million) is in Rio de Janeiro, but there are projects of all sizes currently on offer. Perhaps the most interesting development is an attempt by Sao Simao in Goias state to combine water and wastewater with solid waste under a single concession package. Not everyone is convinced it will work (see story p18). 2.1 We have steadily been building our pipeline of sludge management opportunities, with Germany emerging as a particular hotbed of activity as local authorities try to get ahead of phosphorus regulations.
