Without doubt, batteries are the biggest fire risk for waste and recycling businesses. Batteries are ever-present in the sector -whether they are being processed through waste streams in mobile phones, children's toys or general WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) or in sustainable vehicles managing and operating the waste itself. Wherever there is a battery, there is a fire risk. What Are the Risks? No matter their type, shape or size, the primary risk of any battery is thermal runaway. This occurs when there is a malfunction in the battery cells (caused by mechanical failure, overvoltage or physical damage). In thermal runaway, a battery will begin creating excess heat, which in turn generates more heat, causing rapid temperature increases.
