The port of Southampton, situated at the confluence of the River Itchen and River Test and the marine area known as The Solent, is a major container terminal and bulk commodities centre on England's south coast.Due to its sheltered location and unique tidal profile, Southampton has grown to become the second largest container-handling port in the UK, after Felixstowe, in Suffolk.The major vessel berthing areas are divided into three distinct sections. The Old Dock, referred to in railway terms as Eastern Docks, is situated on a narrow peninsular of land. This is served by a single line branching off from the South West Main Line at Northam Junction, just south of St Denys station, running south for about 1.5 miles. The line enters the dockland at Canute Road crossing, where berths 20-49 are situated.
