Anyone who has visited a Royal Park or stately home in autumn will undoubtedly be familiar with the rut. The drama of fallow bucks and red deer stags pawing the ground, their hot breath condensing in the chilly air, encapsulates wild Britain at its best. But when I set out to photograph rutting fallow deer near my home in Devon, I came to realise that the rut is only a small part of their breeding behaviour. In fact, as my study would show, though these deer may be abundant, much about them remains mysterious.
