GRIMALDI Group has contracted a pair of ro-ro cargo ships in China which will be virtual repeats of a series of advanced vessels ordered by the company in 2018. The latest ships are expected to be delivered in 2025 from China's Jinling Shipyard and will be based on the so-called Grimaldi Green 5th Generation-class design, of which 12 were ordered in two batches four years ago. The final ship in the series, Eco Italia (IMO: 9859612), is due for delivery in November. No price has been disclosed for this deal. However, the original 12 ships were contracted at $40m each. Since they were ordered, newbuilding costs have risen 30%. Grimaldi's GG5G series, which was designed by Danish marine consultants Knud E Hansen, features a battery hybrid system to enable zero-emissions port operations. They are also fitted with exhaust gas scrubbers and hull air lubrication.
