Rabies is a vaccine preventable fatal disease about which the pet owners, farmers and public have serious concern in the state of Kerala. Most of the suspected cases in animals with neurological manifestations are brought for rabies diagnosis and data are collected for understanding the epidemiology and pathobiology of the disease from time to time which give an approximate reflection of the situation in the whole state. Canine rabies is the main source of infection in man and other species of animals and therefore disease control requires a comprehensive multisectoral collaborative effort from all the stakeholders in the state. The pattern of disease occurrence, vaccination and other policies taken by the government in the way forward for a rabies free state and the areas where one health approach can largely help in the control of rabies are discussed here.
