THE European Union must continue to shift away from Russian gas to reliable suppliers, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged, as the bloc proposed raising more than €140 billion ($140 billion) from energy companies to protect consumers from soaring energy prices.Delivering the annual state of the union speech to the European Union parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen said the bloc was working to protect households and businesses from the spike in energy costs in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine."Making ends meet is becoming a source of anxiety for millions of businesses and households," von der Leyen said.
