Thermal coal imports into western Europe rose by 12pc on the year in September, while an increase in installed and available German capacity is set to support a further uptick in deliveries in October and into the winter months. Steam coal imports into western European ports — includ-ing Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Neth-erlands, Spain and the UK — reached 6.28mn t in September, up from 5.59mn t in the same month a year ago, provisional shipping data show. But this is down from a peak of 9mn t in April and an average of 8.1mn t/month over April-July as shippers rushed to import Russian volumes ahead of the EU’s embargo and diversify to alternative origins.
