Seeing Yoshinori Shima move about the floor of the 2004 Sakufu-ten exhibit checking out the final details of the trees on exhibit before the public is brought in on opening day of the show, one has the feeling that Shima-san is someone who commands special care, especially when he is observed in a serious debate with a colleague over the exact positioning of Shima-sans award winning literati bonsai. Howeuer, nothing could be further from the truth; Shima-san proved to be a very gentle and shy man who tried his best to deflect the spotlight from himself and instead share it with his fellow bonsai artists.
