Gazprom plans to bypass Lithuania

Gazprom is looking for ways to deliver gas to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad without transporting it through Lithuania, which in turn wants to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. The firm plans to build an LNG regasification terminal in Kaliningrad, which consumes over 2.1bn m3/yr of gas. Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller and Kaliningrad region governor Nikolai Tsukanov signed a preliminary agreement on the terminal on 23 September. The gas giant plans to complete feasibility studies for the project by the end of 2014, determining its capacity and start-up date. It has not provided any cost estimates.
