Uzbekistan is talking up progress on gas exports to China, but its ability to boost production is open to question. Uzbekneftegaz began exporting gas to China in mid-August, four months behind schedule. News of the start of exports came after President Islam Karimov met China's vice-premier Hui Liangyu in Tashkent on 12 September. China expressed interest in buying more Uzbek gas, Uzbek official media reports. The current deal with China's CNPC envisages exports of 10bn m3/yr, but no deadline was disclosed.
