CHINESE government and industry officials are on alert after the Omicron variant of coronavirus was discovered in the northern city of Tianjin, home to several fabrication yards. Tianjin-based offshore contractor Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) has ordered its employees to work from home until they obtain a negative test result, according to sources. However, modules fabrication specialist Bomesc Offshore Engineering is running its Tianjin yard as normal, although medical authorities have set up eight screening checkpoints. As of Tuesday, Tianjin had reported 40 confirmed cases since Saturday's outbreak. Up to 21,380 of the city's residents are regarded as being in close contact with those infected. Tianjin began testing its 14 million residents after 20 children and adults tested positive on Saturday, including at least two with the Omicron variant.
