Donna Kemp Spangler Idaho Falls, Idaho Regarding the article in the Readers Write section (page 6) of the January 2022 issue of Nuclear News, oil companies should have a significant interest in nuclear power, as their reserves of petroleum are depleted. Combining energy from a nuclear power plant with Fischer-Tropsch chemistry, they could produce synthetic liquid fuels, as is done presently from natural gas by Shell in Malaysia and Qatar and by Sasol in Qatar and South Africa. Sourcing carbon dioxide and hydrogen from the environment makes these fuels sustainable and carbon-neutral, and they flow seamlessly in existing infrastructure.
