The anesthetic management is described for 33 infants below one year of age having palliative or corrective surgery on the heart or great vessels. The tolerance to potent anesthetic agents is related to pulmonary blood flow; patients with increased pulmonary flow-mainly noncyanotic-tolerated halothane anesthesia quite well; patients with decreased pulmonary blood flow or with transposition and poor mixing of blood-mainly cyanptic patients-were managed with muscle relaxants, small doses of narcotics, or minimal doses of halothane
