Fusion welding dissimilar combinations of high-strength aluminum alloys is desirable for industries but complicated in its implementation. Solidification defects and difficulties in heat treating dissimilar joints often make the operation impractical. Here, nano-treatment with TiC in the arc welding process allows successful joining of AA2024 and AA7075 while promoting a significant natural aging response in the joint. The dissimilar joints regain between 30 and 40 HV in the weld metal over a period of 10 weeks while remaining free of major defects. Nano-treatment shows great potential in enabling significant metallurgical capabilities in high-strength aluminum alloy systems.
