EU sulphur directive to raise shipping costs

An EU directive designed to reduce sulphur emissions in the shipping industry could raise coal freight costs by 10pc, delegates heard today at the Freight By Water conference in Middlesbrough, UK. The directive requires sulphur emissions be reduced to 0.1 pc from current requirements of 1pc by 2015, for ships entering, departing, or passing through a designated control area around the North Sea.
