摘要

This Railway was aptly named Northeast Frontier Railway as it serves the Northeastern Frontier of the country sharing border with several foreign countries, such as Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and China. This railway serves all the northeastern states including 'Seven Sisters' states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur along with Sikkim and parts of East Bihar and North Bengal. The present day Northeast Frontier Railway took its present shape on January 15, 1958 after it was carved out of the erstwhile Northeastern Railway. The zone has five divisions headquartered at Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding and Tinsukia.
