There is a small freshwater mussel in the family Mytilidae that has recently raised some concern over its potential to invade freshwater systems in the U.S. The golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei, is a small (25mm-35mm) mussel that has received attention from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as an invasive species with the potential to become yet another invasive species in the Great Lakes. At the present time the USGS states, "This species is not currently in the Great Lakes region but may be elsewhere in the US." (USGS, 2021) Where it has settled in quite comfortably is South America.
