FAO lowers wheat output expectations for 2016-17

Global wheat production could amount to just under 713mn t in 2016-17, according to the latest forecasts from the UN agriculture body the FAO. The new projection is 10mn t lower than FAO's previous 2016-17 production forecast, and 2.8pc lower than the esti- mated 2015-16 global output, because of declines in plant- ings in Russia and Ukraine and an anticipated decrease in yields in Morocco and the EU. This is in line with projections by intergovernmental grains body the IGC published earlier in April.
