An update on the progress of the UK National Johne's Management Plan and lnterHerd+ Johne's Disease Tracker

The UK National Johne’s Management Plan (NJMP), which was developed by the National Action Groups on Johne’s, encourages British Cattle Veterinary Association-accredited Johne’s veterinary advisers and farmers to work together to establish their Johne’s Disease (JD) risk and status, followed by creating a management plan. Herein, the progress of the NJMP is assessed and JD-related parameters using milk ELISA data from 253 herds are examined. Crucially, the participation of milk suppliers and farmers in the NJMP scheme remains stable. Moreover, the development of the InterHerd-r JD tracker allows farmers and vets to observe progress measures and effectively identify drivers of JD, as well as more easily identify cattle which represent the highest transmission risk using the priority cull parameter. Future developments of the NJMP aim to explore standardized JD risk assessments and methods of determining JD herd status, in addition to developing a national JD database.
