Western Railway has always been a pioneer when it comes to providing various facilities for our esteemed women commuters, especially, pertaining to safety and security as well as child protection measures. Western Railway is the first railways in India as well as the first in the entire world to introduce the dedicated "Ladies' Special" train in the Mumbai suburban section, way back in 1992. Further, Western Railway has added many more feathers to its cap such as CCTV cameras and talk-back system inside ladies' coaches, 'Meri Saheli', etc for the security and aid of women commuters. In the Mumbai suburban section, Western Railway is currently running 10 Ladies Special local services. Recently, an additional Second Class compartment with 25 seats has been earmarked in all non-AC local trains, thereby increasing the seating capacity to 25.50%. India's and Mumbai city's first AC local continues to stand out on the railway tracks as Western Railway has made it more distinctive for women passengers by painting the coaches earmarked for women. The coaches earmarked for women is painted in vibrant hues of green along with image of a smiling woman making it easier for the lady passengers to identify the coach reserved for them. The Ladies coaches in local trains are escorted by Security staff of Government Railway Police (GRP) from 21.00 hrs to 06.00 hrs. For the convenience of lactating mothers, Western Railway has made provision for feeding babies by segregating an area inside the Waiting Halls at 49 stations.
