If I asked you to write down your top 10 phrases to describe a career in general practice, the chances are that 'managing uncertainty' would feature heavily in plenty of your lists. Uncertainty and the variety it can bring to our working lives is one of the things that draws many of us to general practice, providing the richness and complexity that makes the job both challenging and fulfilling. Uncertainty is something that we have trained for and something that we can normally handle, but as I write this article on 22 April 2020, uncertainty is being redefined by a threat that none of us have ever faced before.
