To analyse the lightning strike damage mechanism of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites with a fastener, a simulation and an experimental model were established. The influences of different lightning attachment points and specimen length on the damage behavior of CFRP composites with a fastener were studied. The results showed that the damage morphology and sparking joint behavior of the specimen varied with the lightning attachment points. When the lightning struck the fastener, outgassing and sparking occurred at the structural joints, and the specimen length had little effect on the damage behavior. A conductive network model was established to analyse the internal current path. The interaction between lightning and the specimen was related to clarify the damage mechanism. This work provides a method to predict lightning damage characteristics and reduce the delamination and outgassing damage of specimen through shunting.
