On Friday 15th October, the new series of the Waterways World Podcast was launched, with canal boat families historian Lorna York joining editor Bobby Cowling for the first episode. Lorna is descended from a long line of working boaters - indeed, she was the first in her family to be born on land. Having compiled a database of over 12,000 boat people, she is well placed to offer advice on researching boating ancestry and provide insights into the social history of the canal boat workers. The fortnightly podcasts aim to give listeners a better understanding of the heritage, culture and characteristics of our inland navigations by talking to the people who have active involvement with them. In a forthcoming episode, Mark Langley will discuss the evolution of boat design, from the early leisure-boats through to today's luxury craft.
