Australia’s largest thermal coal port of Newcastle in New South Wales (NSW) is on track to ship 12pc less coal in 2022 than 2021 and 16pc less than the peak in 2019, after maintenance and wet weather weighed on September shipments. Newcastle shipped 10.06mn t of coal in September, down from 13.08mn t in August and from 13.9mn t in September 2021. Apart from the more than fve-year low of 7.73mn t in July caused by fooding, September shipments were the lowest from the port since March 2021 when Newcastle Coal Infra-structure was replacing a broken shiploader.
