摘要

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has revealed the concept proposals by the all-star line-up of finalists vying to design a £15 million cultural hub at The Crichton, a former psychiatric hospital in Dumfries. The five-strong shortlist includes multidisciplinary teams led by Caruso St John Architects and MUMA, as well as leading Scottish firms Hoskins, Sutherland Hussey Harris and AJ 40 under 40 practice O'DonnellBrown. Nearly 70 teams responded to the call for entries issued in July - the largest response ever to a RIAS Consultancy-organised design contest. Backed by The Crichton Trust with support from the government's UK Community Renewal Fund, the competition was launched to find a team to create a new archive and heritage centre dedicated to the site's 180-year heritage. The brief also sought 'explicitly to encourage collaboration and to enable a diverse range of practices - including smaller firms - to apply'. The Crichton Project for Memory and Wellbeing will replace a disused laundry complex on the 34ha site, which was home to the Crichton Royal Hospital and is now a remote campus for the University of Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway College.
