ATPase in isolated glycerinated flagella ofChlamydomonas snowiaeis shown to be inhibited by high ATP concentrations, by DNP at pH 6.0 and by salyrgan. The enzyme is activated by Mg++and the activation is reversed by Ca++. A number of other factors which can affect the phototactic behaviour of the cells do not affect ATPase activity, indicating that the response of directional motility is under separate control in the intact cell.
