The sky is a very big place and describing the position of the Moon, planets or stars within it can be difficult. Astronomers locate and track these celestial objects by imagining the sky as a huge sphere surrounding Earth, which is divided up into 88 areas. Each area, known as a constellation, usually contains a grouping of bright stars. Imaginary lines join these stars to form recognisable and memorable patterns such as lions, bears, dogs and crowns, or mythical creatures such as a dragon, a flying horse, and a unicorn.
