THE FIRST of a new generation of satellites that the European Space Agency (ESA) claims will "revolutionise short-term weather forecasting in Europe" was launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket in December 2022 from French Guiana. The six Meteosat Third Generation Imager (MTG-Ⅰ) satellites for the early detection and prediction of fast-developing and severe storms, weather forecasting and climate monitoring are a collaboration between ESA and Eumetsat. ESA said: "This third generation of weather satellites will not only guarantee the continuity of data for weather forecasting from geostationary orbit for the next two decades, but significantly enhances the current imager capabilities."
