When Coats Viyella, the sewing threads manufacturer, was looking for new ventures in the late 1970s, it came forward with the idea of producing prosthetic arteries for use in surgery performed on patients with cardiovascular disease. These prosthetic arteries are used to replace or bypass the larger arteries i.e. 6mm diameter and above."Up until then we were more famous for making bed jackets for M&S," explains Vascutek [the offshoot company's current name] textile technical manager Iqbal Ghulam.
