Like all limb regions, the visibility of topographic features depends upon having the right conditions of illumination in conjunction with a favourable libration. The extreme foreshortening of features near the limb makes observation difficult, often frustrates identification and can lead to misinterpretation - this was especially true in the pre-Space Age era, before the true extent of features along the south-western limb came into plain view.
