Most deep sky imagers seem to be interested in nebulae, planetary nebulae, galaxies and just about anything other than the stars themselves. In fact, many astrophotographers do their level best to minimise the impact of stars in their images of nebulae during their image processing. Personally, I prefer star images to images of nebulae. Star fields, such as the Scutum star field, create much more of a wow factor for me than yet another North America and Pelican Nebula image. I find the most striking deep sky images are often those with just a single bright central star, like the accompanying image of Sirius, and the aim of this article is to provide a few pointers for creating your own high impact star images.
